Pregnant or Working MotherThe Stafford/Direct Loan that you are seeking to have deferred must have been disbursed prior to July 1, 1993; PLUS Loan borrowers must have been disbursed before August 15, 1983. Click here to check to see when your loan(s) was disbursed. A parental leave deferment is intended to cover you when you are pregnant or caring for your newborn or newly adopted child. You cannot be attending school or cannot be working during this period. You must also have been enrolled at least halftime during the six (6) months prior to the date on which the deferment should begin. A working mother deferment is intended to cover mothers of preschool age children when the mothers are entering or reentering the work force. A preschool age child is defined as one who is not yet enrolled in first grade or a higher grade in elementary school.
