Georgia's HERO Scholarship Program

Non-Need Based Scholarship

Purpose

To provide educational scholarship assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones and the children and the surviving spouses of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for a Georgia's HERO Scholarship, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Be a Georgia resident who is an active member of the Georgia National Guard or U.S. Military Reserves who was deployed outside the United States for active duty service to a location designated as a combat zone and served in such combat zone for at least 181 cumulative days, beginning on or after February 1, 2003; or

  2. Be a daughter or son whose parent is a Georgia resident who was a member of the Georgia National Guard or U.S. Military Reserves who was deployed outside of the United States for active duty service to a location designated as a combat zone and served in such combat zone for at least 181 cumulative days, beginning on or after February 1, 2003, or was killed, totally disabled or was evacuated from such combat zone due to severe injuries during any length of time, beginning on or after February 1, 2003. The children of eligible National Guard members and Reservists must have been born prior to the qualifying term of service or within nine months of the beginning of the qualifying term of service and must have been 25 years of age or younger during the qualifying term of service.

  3. Be a spouse of a member of the Georgia National Guard or U.S. Reserves who, while serving for any length of time on or after February 1, 2003, was killed in a combat zone or died or became 100% disabled as a result of injuries received in a combat zone. The member must have been deployed outside of the United States for active duty service to a location designated as a combat zone.

Value

Recipients may receive up to $2,000 per academic school year for each qualifying term of service, for a maximum of $8,000 for the equivalent of four years of study. Award amounts are prorated for school terms in which recipients are enrolled for less than fulltime (12 hours).

Approved Institutions

Recipients must attend an institution which is a unit of the University System of Georgia, or the Technical College System of Georgia, or an eligible private/independent college or university in Georgia. pdfView a list of HERO eligible institutions.

Application Procedure
